This large grit mill stood between the Western Maryland tracks and modern-day Rte. 550 just North of Slabtown on the way to Lantz. As you can see this was a massive structure that stood at least six stories above the railway. In this early 1900s view, it looks like the building is still under construction and a worker appears to be unloading material from the truck parked in the center of the picture. This mill crushed local greenstone grit for asphalt roofing shingles and other purposes. There was a quarry located on the other side of Rte. 550, concrete piers used in the movement of the greenstone from the quarry to the mill can still be seen on the right-hand side of the roadway. In this view, you can see the Western Maryland track and the siding that serviced this structure. Rte 550 runs across the front to the mill, and a truck is seen along the roadway. To the right of the mill are several houses associated with the mill. I remember two of these being occupied when I was a kid they were removed in the late 1960s, and the foundations could be seen for many years at a pull-off close to where the homes sat. There are still some concrete piers and foundations along the railway from the mill structure and I think there may still be some bits and pieces of hardware associated with the siding.
