Everyone is familiar with Hagerstown & Frederick Railway Freight Motor No 5! She sits within the footprint of the H&F Trolley Station on East Main Street in Thurmont. No. 5 was a regular visitor to Thurmont when the trolley line was in operation. As a Freight Motor, No. 5 carried freight and also pulled other freight cars between Thurmont and Frederick. The H&F provided a direct link between the Western Maryland Railroad and Frederick City. Even after passenger service was discontinued freight service carried on for an additional two years. This photo of No. 5 was taken at the Car Barn at the H&F Yard in Frederick in 1946. There are many photo of No. 5 in Thurmont and on the line to Frederick.
No. 5 will be celebrating her 100th anniversary this year having been built at the Frederick Shops in 1920.
