This receipt from Murray Vandiver, Treasurer of Maryland acknowledges the payment of $18.75 made by the Citizens Electric Light and Power Company. This payment represented one-eighth of one percent of the capital stock the company was authorized to hold.
The Citizens Electric Light and Power Company was formed by a group of forward-thinking investors determined to bring electric service and street lights to the Town of Thurmont. This was the start of what is now the Thurmont Electric Company, and our residents and businesses are still receiving dependable electric service 113 years later. Today the Thurmont Electric Company continues the tradition established in 1908, delivering electricity to our residents at the best possible cost.
But before the lines were electrified the Citizens Electric Light and Power Company needed to get permission from the State of Maryland to operate. Dated October 2, 1909, these are the original documents from the State Treasurer's Office authorizing the power company to operate.
