This photograph from the early 1940's was taken by George Wireman and features a mounted Police officer leading a parade down East Main Street from the square. With the exception of the brick hose on the right, all the buildings remain today. In many of the old photos of Thurmont the streets are lined with trees, just a couple of years ago the last of the big trees on West Main Street were removed during the sidewalk repair project. This photo predates the installation of curb and gutter on Main Street. The brick house at the right sits where the small commercial units with Main Street Groomers and Catoctin Lighting are now located. The house at the left recently housed Rosemary McDermott's law office. At the right, you can just see the white electric sub-station between the house and the tree and in the center can be seen the porch of Sam Long's brick house surrounded by trees next to Memorial Park.
