Baseball was a big thing in Thurmont for many years. This was an adult league and the Thurmont team was evidently a powerhouse in the local league, they played home games on the field at Thurmont High School. This photo by George Wireman shows a game sometime in the 1940's. An indication of how popular baseball was is the grandstand that is seen in this photo. The roofline of the old THS building can be seen above the grandstand and you will note that the smokestack we remember is not in this photo. The grandstand was taken down when the East wing was added in 1949, housing the gymnasium, cafeteria, and classrooms. The 1949 addition is the only remaining part of Thurmont High School still standing.
