I remember the American Store when it was located on Water Street in the old Moravian Church building. Prior to being at that location, it was at 3 West Main Street. Until just recently (March 2019) the Long & Foster Office occupied the first floor of the building.
Here are a series of photographs taken inside the American Store when it was at 3 West Main Street. These photos were taken by George Wireman and are probably from some time prior to 1945. By 1948 the American Store had moved to Water Street and was replaced by the Thurmont Lunch. In later years the Texas Lunch was located here, then the train shop occupied the building for many years.
There are a few individuals in the photos and if anyone recognizes them please leave a comment.
The fruit and vegetable stand was located at the rear of the store. On the floor are several vegetable baskets full of produce.
