The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps of Thurmont, MD, dated April 1904.
These maps were produced by the Sanborn Map Company of 11 Broadway, New York. They were used for calculating Fire Insurance rates and feature a description of the buildings with the materials, heating, lighting methods, dimensions, and in some cases the usage. Structures are color-coded to reflect the building material used. The notes indicate the Fire Equipment available, the number of firefighters, and sources of water. The maps are broken into several sections and can be hard to visualize without the main map key on the first page. It is interesting to see the descriptions on the buildings, several are noted as General Store, Bank, Watch Maker, Drugs, Wheel Wright, Church, Bank, Black Smith, etc.
