A detail showing all the individuals.

The caption on the photo reads "B. F. Hammaker's 51st Anniversary of Business in Mechanicstown, Md." It is fortunate that the names have been added to this print, in so many old photos, there’s no way to know who the people are.

In this photo can be seen B. F. Hammaker's sons Wilbur Foard Hammaker, identified by the number 21. Wilbur owned a monument business in Libertytown. To his left is his half-brothers Frank Ensor Hammaker (#22) and at the far right is Ernest Peter Hammaker (#26). When Peter Hammaker died in 1925 Frank and Ernest took over the business and renamed it Hammaker Brothers. They were partners until sometime in the 1940s when they divided the company. I worked for both of these men and can tell you they were opposite of each other in many ways. Frank was an easy-going guy, while Ernest was a shrewd businessman. After the split Frank lived a quiet life in Towson where his business was located, and a branch office in Annapolis. Ernest stayed in Thurmont and ran up to seven branch locations spread across MD, VA, and PA. Frank drove a beat up Buick Century, while Ernest had a Lincoln Mark IV Continental. I used to drive Ernest and Edith to brunch at Ft. Detrick and to fancy gatherings in Washington and Hagerstown. Frank wasn’t a social butterfly, his idea of a good time was to stop at pastry shops in Woodlane and Annapolis for a treat.

This is brothers Peter Hammaker (#2) on the left and Frank Hammaker (#3) on the right. The business was established by Frank Hammaker in 1874. Peter worked with his brother for a couple of years before working in Washington DC for several years. He returned to Mechanicstown and took over the business. He operated the company until his death on August 27, 1925.

Here's a great photo taken to celebrate the 51st Anniversary of Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Hammaker's memorial shop in Thurmont. Of course, when the business was established, it was in Mechanicstown. The photo was taken in front of the Peter Hammaker house on North Church Street and features many prominent Hammaker family members.

This is the entire photo, including the list of individuals at the bottom. Sadly, not everyone is identified in the photograph. A caption reads 'B. F. Hammaker 51st Anniversary of Business in Mechanicstown, Md.' Frank started his business in 1874, so this photo must have been taken in 1925.

Here is a photo showing Ernest Hammaker (on the left) and three other unknown gentlemen at the Boy Scout Memorial in Washington D.C. Hammaker Brothers of Thurmont was involved in the creation and installation of this memorial. I went there with my father several times when he was cutting the inscription in the stone surrounding the reflecting pool. We still have a few small pieces of the pink granite somewhere. Ernest had us create a sign for Windy Woods out of a large section of the pink granite, but it is long gone now having been damaged by a snow plow. The memorial is located in behind the White House to the East of the Elipse along 15th Street NW.

Here is some information about the Boy Scout Memorial form Wikipedia"
The sculpture sits at the location of the 1937 National Scout Jamboree, the first jamboree. It was dedicated on November 7, 1964 and accepted by Associate Supreme Court Justice Tom C. Clark who celebrated his 50th anniversary of being an Eagle Scout on that day.

The sculpture consists of three bronze figures: a Boy Scout in the center wearing a uniform stepping forward and carrying a walking stick in his left hand. Flanking him are two larger allegorical figures of a man and woman. They represent "American Manhood and Womanhood and the ideals they will pass onto the youth." To the Boy Scout's right side is the male figure, nearly nude, who carries a bundle of leaves and drapery in his left arm. Part of the drapery blows across his middle as he strides forward with his right leg. To the Scout's left side is the female figure who holds a torch in her left hand that has a gold-colored flame. Her left hand extends slightly and her palm is facing upward and she strides forward on her right leg. The three figures are mounted on a hexagonal-shaped base (62 x 92 x 98 in.) and in front of the sculpture is a circular pool of water.

A panel on the base is inscribed with the Scout Oath:

On my honor I, Will do my best
To do my duty, To God & my
Country and to obey the Scout law to
Help other people At all times
To keep myself Physically strong
Mentally awake And morallyStraight

The rim of the pool is inscribed:
This memorial was authorized by the Congress of the United States and directed in recognition of the fiftieth anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America in grateful tribute to the men and women whose generosity devotion and leadership have brought Scouting to the nation's youth and to honor all members of the Boy Scouts of America who in days of peace and times of peril have their duty to God and their country.
