This United States Postal Service National Air Mail Week cover from May 21, 1938, was canceled at the Thurmont Post Office and signed by Thurmont Post Master Earl T. Kelbaugh. The envelope celebrates The Old Match House on West Main Street. Jacob Weller manufactured the first Friction Matches manufactured in the United States at this location in 1825.

Not in bad shape for being 90 years old. Most Post Offices issued Air Mail Week covers and they are very collectable little slices of local history.

The corner stamp features a rendition of the Match House on West Main Street. The building still stands but has had a second floor added.

Thurmont Postmaster Earl T. Kelbaugh signed this envelope. Mr. Kelbaugh served as Postmaster in Thurmont from his appointment in 1938 until his retirement. Lee Munshour then served as Postmaster.

Mechanicstown Name Meeting 001 JAK (Thurmont Images M)

This is a handbill announcing the meeting to discuss changing the name of Mechanicstown to some as-of-yet unknown moniker. Today we know what happened but at this time on November 30, 1893, it was anyone's guess as to what the new name would be! There were many long-winded editorials in the Catoctin Clarion regarding the name change. The editor had his own ideas and was always ready to let the readers know where he stood. The name Blue Mountain City was an early favorite, but it was rejected by the Western Maryland Railway due its length. In the end, Thurmont won out and was attributed to Charles Cassell, Editor, and Publisher of the Catoctin Clarion.
