This is a third view of the Western Maryland Railway wreck at Glen Afton Springs on November 27, 1912. Glen Afton Springs is located just past Pen Mar as the Western Maryland line headed toward Smithsburg and Hagerstown. The two trains involved were #204-3rd pulled by Engine 626 and #203-1st pulled by Engine 620. Notes with the negative say that Henderson, the Engineer on 626 was killed outright in the accident and the Fireman died later. The conductor was John Nichols. Engine 620 was being driven by William Eckhart and Ike King was the Conductor. Both Engines 620 and 626 were 2-8-0 Baldwins built in 1906 or 1907.
In this view, you can see the tender of one of the engines and a baggage car jutting up in the air. If you look closely you can see that the tender and baggage car are being held in this odd position by several sets of trucks that have been jammed under the tender due to the impact. A man can be seen climbing on top of the tender Standing under the baggage car was probably not a very good idea!
This may have also been an original image owned by Ed Killough. Mr. Hicks had a large collection of railroad images, and many were photos of photos. At the time these were taken photo scanners were not available and if you did not have the original negative your only option was to take a photo of the photo.
