Here's a neat little memo dated Jan. 15, 1898 from Frank Hesson, freight agent at the Western Maryland Station notifying B. H. Griswald of some lumber to be moved on the Monocacy Valley Rail Road from Catoctin Furnace to the Excelsior Mill in Thurmont. This was prior to the incorporation of the MVRR rail line in the Frederick Railroad and before the Excelsior Mill burned in 1899. The location 59 1/4 refers to the mileage markers on the Western Maryland line.
The memo reads:
B. H. Griswald Esq. (?) Frt Agt (Freight Agent)
S. M. Birely advised that he will have about 40 Cor (Cord) looks like Poplar wood from Catoctin Furnace over the MVRR (Monocacy Valley Rail Road) which he would like to have shifted to 59 ¼ for unloading at his Excelsior works, and asks what will be the very lowest charge per cord for this service. Yours Truly, Frank Hesson Agt.
