This note was written on the Agent's Office letterhead at the Western Maryland Rail Road Station in Mechanicstown on May 27, 1893, this was a year before the town's name changed to Thurmont. This note was sent by Mechanicstown WMRR Agent Frank Hesson to the Pen Mar Agent, H. H. Myers asking him to look for an item at his freight house.

"H. H. Myers, Esq. Dear Sir, Please look carefully if you check even in your Frt (freight) House  1 Bell (?) Tire Iron Marked Wa Palley and forward to me by #8 Monday without fail, Ys (Yours) F. Hesson, Agt."

The response in the lower left says, "Pen Mar Pa Nothing on hand marked as above. 5/29/1893  H. H. Myers.

As with everything else the railroads issued this has an official number, Form 1-A and is identified at the top right as being authorized on 11-19-1892, the first numbers 1101 probably indicate where it was printed.  The Station name, Mechanicstown has been rubber stamped on the form. At the top center is a hole probably from a tack and at the center is a hole from a desk paper spindle. Paper spindles were a sharp spike with a sometimes decorative base that kept small pieces of paper like receipts or notes from falling off the desk or table and were popular until the mid-1900s.  The warning "Do not fold, spindle or mutilate" this was used to prevent damage to computer punch cards. An extra hole from the spindle could throw off the computations.
